if we could get some of that touchscreen goodness on the windows version, that'd be great too.
The Dell Inspiron Duo is a good example.Laserbeak43 wrote:if we could get some of that touchscreen goodness on the windows version, that'd be great too.
As far as I know, any of the conveniences offered by touchscreens in the iPad version (e.g., dragging stuff around in the advanced song view) should still work the same on a Windows PC that has a touchscreen. There might be a tiny bit of extra work to get multi-touch working, but that's something I already have to tackle for iPad, so things should be ready to go when I find those Windows APIs.
The entire code stack now builds and runs on the device.
You can already play a song using a connected keyboard. (Don't mind that it crashes as soon as the song is over and that you only get like 10 frames per second... I'll totally fix that stuff before it's released. )
Seriously though, this is a huge milestone.
It's up to 60 fps on the iPad 2 & 3, and is way less finicky now. (The iPad 1 is a different story. I'm still investigating.)
Otherwise, I tracked down all of the crashes I'd run into and now things are actually sort of playable. Multi-touch isn't in yet so you can still only hit one note at a time on the keyboard. Still, it's to the point where you can plunk out a whole part on the itsy-bitsy piano keys and earn some points (even though confetti is still broken).

wow, i remember this being one of the selling points for my ipad2 , .. about this time last year actually
very excited for this release! thanks so much for your continued dedication
Yeah, it has taken quite a bit longer than I ever expected. Sorry for that. A lot of things in the app itself had to change to accommodate the new form factor, touch input, and all that.
The good news is that all the hard parts are done now. Even better: there has always been the risk that once I got everything up and running on the device, there would be some big deal-breaker like the code being inherently too slow to work or something. Well, I can now report that isn't the case! I've seen the whole thing running end-to-end with my own eyes. Everything is very smooth. (Granted, I haven't tested with any of my torture test MIDIs, but those results aren't very interesting anyway. Things are already playable right now.)
I do have to thank you guys. I was hesitant for more than a year before I even committed to starting the project. It wasn't until everyone continued to make it clear how much you wanted to see Synthesia on that platform that I made the decision. And the enthusiasm I've received from users like yourself throughout the process has kept me going! Thanks!

We're coming up on the 3rd beta build in the next few days. I'm nearly finished implementing the new key and note graphics. I'll make a desktop build too (even though the zoom popup still mentions pinching) so everyone else can get the fixes that have accrued over the last month.
With as few tasks as will be left after that (in-app purchase, song library smooth scrolling, and whatever small bits of usability I can fit in time) it's looking like the 4th build will be a release candidate.
It's exciting that this is a thing that will actually exist soon.

Alright, in-app purchase is done and I've tested it as best I can. Everything went really smoothly. Apple only allows testing purchases internally, unfortunately, or I'd be able to get another 100 looks at it from you guys. Oh well.
Anyway, that means every single mandatory task is complete and not having seen a single crash from TestFlight in the last 960 play sessions, I could submit it for Apple's review today. Still, I'm waiting to hear back from someone about a question I asked, so I've got a couple more days. It seems like my time would best be spent improving the first impression users get, so I'm going to try for a first-run tutorial. It'll open immediately to falling notes, remind users about the Silent switch, show them drag/pinch movement, and let them try playing a few notes themselves: all the essentials.
That will take a day or two, then a day for you guys to test it, and hopefully I'll have received an answer to my question by then. We're almost there! (Review times are looking good, too.)

Woo-Hoo!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Your attention to detail appears to have paid off. Hope this is day one of a wildly successful app which you well deserve.
Awesome, thanks! I just saw the first review (from someone in Brazil) and they seemed pleased with it too. The subject line was "Sensacional!"
I usually try not to be the guy that's all "like, thumbs up, retweet, and vote for X!" but in this case, the ratings shown in the App Store can make or break an app. Especially in these early days, if you are enjoying Synthesia for iPad, please consider rating it (hopefully favorably ) there. You would be helping quite a bit. Thanks!
